Those new to Dubai and the UAE should be aware that they are left-hand side drive countries and therefore, right-hand side vehicles cannot be registered in the UAE. It’s also important to mention that in order to export a car to UAE a local visa and local driving license are necessary so you will also need to be a legal UAE resident.

Cars imported into the UAE must no older than 10 years old. Individuals who want to import older cars will have to check with Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) before shipping.

Which documents do I need to ship my car to Dubai?

Make sure you have the following documents:

  • Original invoice of your vehicle to prove ownership and value
  • Certificate of Origin to prove where the vehicle was made
  • Your original passport, driving license and visa
  • Original shipping receipt
  • Cash or cheque to pay custom fees

On arrival to the UAE, vehicles must go through clearance. Import authorities will check the vehicle afterwards. If the vehicle passes the inspection, you will be charged with a 5% fee of the car worth in the UAE to the authorities. You will have to pay upfront certain fees in order to obtain a clearance certificate and for the vehicle to be released. Once all cleared, blue export plates will be given to attach to the front and rear bumpers.

Vehicle testing, insurance and registration

Those are the final steps of the car export process to Dubai.

You will need first to test your vehicle in one of the vehicle testing areas located all over the UAE. The aim of this test is to prove vehicles are safe and durable. You will need to present the following documents:

  • Original passport, Emirates ID and driving license (and copies)
  • Custom clearance papers
  • Import documents

Once all the testing is cleared, you will need to insure your vehicle and register your vehicle with the Roads and Transport Authority.

The following documents and equipment are mandatory for registration:

  • Proof of purchase
  • Completed application form
  • Blue export number plates
  • Insurance documents
  • Customs clearance letter
  • Original driving license, passport and visa (bring copies too)
  • Proof of residency besides visa e.g utility bill or rental agreement
  • Vehicle inspection clearance

Finally, you will receive white number plates and a registration card which must be present at all times in the vehicle.
