Car Shipping to New Zealand: April Report

Posted by on 26 May 2016 | Comments

The New Zealand Customs announced earlier this month that 18,133 used passenger vehicles entered New Zealand in April 2016. The number of 18,133 units is a record-breaking month for the last 10 years at least and more than 10% up on the highest previous month, which was May 2014 with 16,450 units imported in New Zealand. Hence, some in the industry are questioning the numbers reported.

After a quick calculation based on the fact that:

  • Over 90% of used cars entering New Zealand arrive by PCC (Pure Car Carrier)
  • Over 80% of used cars for the New Zealand market by PCC enter through ports of Auckland
  • 10,500 units used car entered by PCC through ports of Auckland in April

It seems that there may have been 3,000 fewer used cars entering New Zealand last month than reported and the final figure may be closer to 15,000 units than to 18,000 units.

New Zealand Customs responded to question regarding the high number of used imports. ‘Custom’s figures on used car imports for April 2016 are raw data extracted from the Customs import entry processing system that relies on voluntary compliance i.e. entries are submitted by the importers. This data is not yet tested and validated. Customs will be in a better position to provide comment once we have tested and verified the content.’
